Enjoyed this lovely post a lot! We've always had squirrels around, and my hope is that they don't become like sparrows....suddenly pushed out of urban life!

I have seen them eating papads as well. But the most interesting this I have seen them doing is with Rangoli. I am not sure if they eat Rangoli powder. After my neighbour draws a Rangoli in the morning, they come and walk along the Rangoli lines, usually sniffing it closely, seeming to consume a bit. It is funny to watch them walk precisely along the Rangoli's lines, as though they have been trained!

My mother would feed them chapatis. Once, my neighbour's kid took one bite from a slice of bread with jam on it and threw it away. Almost immediately, one of our chapati eating squirrels grabbed it and began to nibble one corner! It was such a funny sight - I can still recall it clearly so many years later! Wish I had had a camera then...

I can never tire of watching them and their antics...we rescued a pair of babies and kept them at home until they were old enough to be sent out...and they were quite a handful to manage
